∀ Births ∈ Home Births: ∃ Death

Good friends of mine just had a successful home birth. I was admittedly nervous, but thrilled that everything went okay; and Sarah's write-up about her experience is here. I encourage you to read it regardless of where you fall on the spectrum of natural birthing. Sarah has devoted much of her time and energy into learning about all aspects of motherhood, and it shows in her writing and conversations on the topic.

I do feel compelled to counter one rather minor and pointless footnote in her article, however. Sarah claims to have never heard of a baby "who died because he or she was born at home...not one." Well, that's just silly. A simple Google News query for "home birth death" turned up this article on the first page. It happened in Ireland last month, it was tragic, and there was a lawsuit against the midwife (litigation--not just for hospital births anymore!) There. Now nobody reading this can claim they've never heard of a baby dying because of a home birth. Return to your lives, citizens.

Dude, seriously? We don't believe that the home is surrounded by some kind of force field that protects babies born within. The next sentence in her post acknowledges this: "Yes, babies die at home. Babies die in the hospital, too.". I think she meant that she doesn't know of any home birth deaths *personally*.

btw: your article link goes to my site (my babies are fine and I'm not Irish).

Also, since you don't seem familiar with the "birth-story" tradition, let me fill you in: a woman's birth story is her experience with all the good and bad, gory and beautiful, and love details poured out of the heart. Such stories are intended to share deeply personal experiences, not to elicit minor and pointless footnote comments or criticisms.... Read More

Finally, you know Sarah and me personally and I would have thought you'd realize that your comments are offensive to us.

"I've personally never seen an albino gorilla." That statement conveys literally no information on the truth or falsity of their existence.

That was my point.
